A survey on prevalance of gastrointestinal helminth parasites of local pigs in and around Kolkata and Jalpaiguri districts, West Bengal, was conducted during the period from NOvember 2000 to October 2000. A total of 1074 faecal samples and 93 stomach and intestine were examined, and altogether ova of 11 different species of helminthus, trematodes (3 species), nematodes (7 species) cestode (1 species) and protozoan cysts/oocysts were recorded in the present study. The incidence of helminthus encountered with their percentage were: F. buski (27.93), G. hominis (20.67), S. suis (25.04), Strongyle sp. (30.35), A. suum (28.58), T. suis (13.22), Metastrongylus sp. (20.11), Strongyloides sp. (14.89), Physocephalus sexalatus (8.19), A. Strongylina (6.33), and Hymenolepsis sp. (1.58) and the protozoa B. coli (46.18) and Eimeria sp. (45.43), out of 11 sp. of helminths recorded in the present study the incidence of F. buski; S. suis; G. hominis; P. sexalatus and A. strongylina were recorded for the first time from the West Bengal. The histopathological study specially in relation to F. buski infection revealed haemorrahage, ulceration and denudation of epithelial layers with infiltration of mononuclear cells like lymphocytes, plasma cells, macrophages and eosinophils in the intestinal tissues of the pigs. The zoonotic significance of F. buski, G. hominis and Hymenolepis sp. have been discussed in relation to close association of pigs with the pig rearing people.
