Influence of potassium and phosphorus on growth and yield in chickpea under water stress

The present investigations were carried out on chickpea (Cicer arietinunI L.) cultivar H-86-18 under pothollse condition. The purpose of study was to ameliorate the deleterious effect of moisture deficit using phosphorus and potassium fertilizers alone and in combinations. Phosphorus and potassium were applied through single super phosphate and muriate of potash, respectively, after germination. Water deficit was created by withholding irrigation at vegetative and reproductive stages. The stressed plants were allowed to revive by supplying irrigation. At both the stages, water stress induced dccreas'e in plant height, dry weight of plant parts, number of pods and weight of grains, while increase in root length: All these parameters of growth and yield responded favourably to fertilizer applications under normal as well as stress conditions.
