Newly released commercial rice hybrids (DRRH 1, PHB 71, Pro-Agro 6201, KHR 2, ADTHR 1, UPHR 1010 and Pant Sankar Dhan 1) and two high yielding varieties as checks (Pant Dhan 4 and Pant Dhan 12) were evaluated for their agronom ~d morpho-physiological traits in a field experiment during kharif 2000. The highest yield of KHR 2 was higher than the best check PD 4 (7.0 t/ha) but the difference waS non-significant. Hybrids although could not excel the best HYV owing to high percentage of spikelet sterility but they showed potential for high yields as these had produced large sink (high num.ber of spikelets/m2). However, hybrids showed 9-16 percent heterosis in total dry matter yield. Heterosis was expressed in vegetative growth (profused tillering, tallness and increased plant dry matter) and reproductive groWth (high number of total spikelets). Therefore, improvement for increased grain filling could be made. The grain yield (t/ha) was positively and significantly correlated with number of filled spikelets/m2, days to 50 percent flowering, biological yield, thermal units and photothermal units. However, negative and non-significant association was found with panicle number/m2. In the path coefficient analysis, the longer crop duration, high amount of dry matter production and lower spikelet stenhty were found to have maximum positive direct effect on gram yield.
