The feasibility of a diesel - ethanol blend for fuel use in CI engine was carried out by using a diesel - ethanol blend containing 170 to 200_ proof ethanol. Diesel - ethanol blends prepared form 170 to 200_ proof ethanol showed similar power producing capabilities, reduced sfc and increased thermal efficiency compared to diesel. Therefore, their use as supplementary fuel is feasible. The miscibility of ethanol with diesel can be improved using surfactants such as 1-butanol which can be derived from biomass. The stable and homogenous micro-emulsions can be prepared using 180_ and 170_ proof ethanol-1-button-diesel. The microemulsion containing 170_ or 180_ proof ethanol-1 butanol-diesel mixed in 1:2:5:5:5 proportion provide a compatible CI engine fuel and supplements about 39
