There are great deal of controvercy between taxonomists on the exact number of willow species in Iran. Boissier has reported 11 species, while Parsa and Mobaien gave the number as 19 species and Sabeti has reported 14 species. In flora Iranica as the taxonomists greatest referring source, the figure is 12 species. Among major reasons behind this controversy , is that willows are dioeciously and flowers are not regularly available moreover, wide occurrence of natural hybrids in the nature, this have caused difficulties in identification of species and varieties. Thus the national project &ldquocollect, identify and establish collect of Iranian willows&rdquowas initinted to collect and identify nationwide samples of willows with the aim of exsito onservation of the species. Herbarium samples of branches, leaves, male and female flowers are maintained in the Research Division of Plant Science to be used by taxonomists and students. In order to fullfill the objectives natural stands of willows along river banks and springs as well as water canals in provinces were regularly visited and samples of the leaves and flowers and stem cuttings were taken. All site information were recorded in relevant forms and cuttings were later planted in research nurseries. In two to three years plants should bear flowers and will be checked and identified taxonomically. Following final identification, seedlings will be prepared and planted (9 trees of any single species). Of 500 samples collected so far, 22 species are indentified. Following species are now added to the list of Iranian willows. Salix denticulate, Salix caprea, Salix einera, Salix pentandya, Salix tmranica.
