An Investigation on Biology of poplar leaf beetles and Natural Enemies determination in Isfahan Province

Isfahan province is one of the important poplar growing places in Iran. Poplar leaf beetle Melasoma populi (Chrysomelidae, Col.) is one of the important Poplar pests. Larvae and adult Its feed on leaves of host plant (Populus sp.) and caused damage the trees.A study has been carried out during 2002-2003 to investigate the biology and natural enemies of the Melasoma populi in lab and natural condition. The random sampling occurred with 7 days interval on trees in station of Baghbahadoran and samples were transported to the laboratory , for the analysis. The two pairs adult of pest were released into the 2 cages. In the each cage was one poplar tree. Also the number of generation was studied in laboratory(25C,16 hours light and 18C, 8 hours dark + %50±5 RH ). Two pairs adult of pest were released on two Poplar trees of populus. The trees were covered by net bag Populi growing change steps were registered every day. 20 pair's adults of M. populi were released on branches of P. euramericana, P. deltoides,P. alba and P. nigra under the net bag. Feeding behavior of pest on leaves was registered every day. Distribution of Poplar leaf beetles were studied in all of the chief cities in Isfahan province. This studies showed M. populi was alone species coleopterous that feed on populus sp . It has one generation per year and overwintering stage was in adult form in the soil. The adults insects appear on June and feed on leaves of host plant for 150 days and mating periods takes about 7 days. A female lays 48 eggs on the leaves. Eggs were laid from April and larval stages developed mainly from may to June. This insect had not obligate diapauses and was able to developmentally and produce three generation at laboratory conditions. In this study it was determined that M. populi was parasitized by Schizonotus sieboldi . Zeugophora sp,and Adoretus persicus were not found at areas of Isfahan. M. populi was found in Baghbahadoran, Lenjan ,khansar,Falavarjan, Najafabad, Lenjan, Golpayegan, kashan, khansar, Natanz and Around of Isfahan city.
