Land suitability evaluation has been determined for irrigated wheat, barley.watermelon and alfalfa in an area about 12902 ha in Aras Dam plain in West Azarbaijan Province. In order to have more confident soil data, soil survey studies were done.Soils were classified based on F.A.O soil classification and 13 families and 58 phases were identified . Climatic data from Poldasht station have been used for climate evaluation of crops . Based on yield coverage and climatic conditions, wheatwatermelon, barley and alfalfa have been considered and compared in the present land suitability evaluation on the basis of irrigated agricltural system. In this region, the most important limiting land characteristics have appeared to be ,land phisical properties limitation ,topography and soil pH. In surveyed area the climatic classes are suitable(S1) for wheat, alfalfa and watermelon and moderately suitable(S2) for barley ,Analysis of rainfall and ETO data reveals that the growing period is about 138 days, starting on October 10 until May. the parametric methode (ie. square root methode) for determination of land indexes for 4 crops, in this methode the land indexes for watermelon was always higher than those for wheat and alfalfa, the square root method was considered to be more realistic for land suitability evaluation in the studied areas .
