Evaluation of procedures increasing multiplication rate of potato seed under hydroponic conditions

Multiplication rate of potato tuber compared with other crops is very low , as a result it negatively affects seed tuber unit price . Since 50-70% of the crop growing expenses belongs to tuber seed , input cost rises accordingly. Objectives of this experiment are to evaluate chemical and physical stimulants under hydroponic conditions . Early (Odesa ) and late (Agria) cultivars from elite class were used in this study . Equal size stem cuttings were cut from mother plants and rooted in a mist-bed under greenhouse conditions . Then these seedlings were transferred to the potting media consist of %75 sand and 25% vermiculite under greenhouse conditions , temperature 19-35؛C and short day of 12-13 hours . After establishment of seedlings , low pH treatment for 6 hours was applied during stolon growth , tuberization and tuber bulking periods. One level of pH at three growth stage were applied. Experiment was conducted in factorial format 2×3 using RCB design. After treatment culminated, seedling return to the normal nutrient solution with neutral pH . After tuber average size reached to 2 to 20 g , all tubers were harvested. Tuber weight and number, shoot and root fresh and dry- weight were recorded. Tuber and plant characteristics were analyzed utilizing SAS package and means were compared. Specific treatment means were compared following preplan test and it was concluded that tuber initiation was the most effective growth stage responding to the pH stimulant.
