In this study, we compared kinetics of follicle development between ovaries from cows diagnosed with premature ovarian atrophy (OA) and those from normal cows. Ovaries were collected from Holstein cows (40-99 months of age) at a slaughter house. Sections of these ovaries (4-microm thick) were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and the number of preantral follicles at each developmental stage was counted under a microscope (x 100). Both the number of preantral follicles and ovary weight in OA cows were significantly lower than those in normal cows. In normal cows, the number of antral follicles positively correlated with the number of primordial and early primary follicles. There was no correlation among the numbers of preantral follicles at each developmental stage, except for between the number of primordial follicles and number of early primary follicles. In ovaries from OA cows, however, the number of antral follicles did not correlate with the number of preantral follicles, but the numbers of preantral follicles correlated with each developmental stage. In conclusion, ovary weight and the number of antral and preantral follicles in OA cows were much lower than those of normal cows and thus the kinetics of ovarian follicle development differ between OA cows and normal cows.
