In vegetative experiments the influence of different soil water content (from 30 to 70 percent of total soil water capacity) on water status of Glycine max plants has been studied with the varieties Mida and Soer-3. By NMR spin echo method the hydration of the apoplast of leaf tissues was determined and it was revealed that it directly depends on water supply; the surface of the leaf during growth period is determined by the hydration of its apoplast. The decline of plant productivity under low water supply occurs above all at the expense of the reduction in plant habitus. By the productivity per unit of leaf area the sensitivity to water supply is significantly lower. The decrease of excessive leaf mass and area under moisture deficit in the variety Soer-3 is regarded as a compensatory resistance mechanism.
