The population abundance and distribution pattern of Liriomyza huidobrensis Blanchard and its natural enemies on potato as affected by vermicompost and reflective plastic mulch was studied during the year 2004 cropping season at Bali, Indonesia. The results showed that the population of Liriomyza heidobrensis larvae and adults and of other pests were lower in plots which received the recommended package of technology plus reflective plastic mulch, and in plots with vermicompost plus reflective plastic mulch. Adults were found in the upper part of the plant while the larvae were present in the lower parts. Vermicompost and reflective plastic mulch did not affect the vertical distribution of the pea leafminer. Three parasitoid species, namely, Hemiptansenus varicornis (Girault), Neochryocharis sp., and Opius sp., were abundant in the field. In vermicompost and vermicompost plus reflective plastic mulch treatments, the number of parasitoids increased progressively starting at 4 weeks after planting (WAP) while in the other treatments (Farmer practice, Recommended package of technology and Recommended package of technology plus reflective plastic mulch) it only reached a plateau 9 WAP. These results indicate that reflective plastic mulch reduced the population of leaf miner but had no effect on the population of parasitoid. Leaf area and leaf nitrogen were not correlated with damage intensity caused by either leafminer or other leaf pests. Vermicompost plus reflective plastic mulch gave the most satisfying results in suppressing pest population, enhancing population of leaf miner parasitoid, reducing plant damage and increasing yield.
