Non-uniform spatial distribution of chlorophylla in the shoots of selected temperate seagrass species

The distribution of chlorophylla content in a shoot between temperate seagrass species in Akkeshi Bay, Hokkaido, Japan was determined during the month of September 2003. Determination of chlorophylla along the leaves of Zostera marina L., Z. asiatica Miki and Phyllospadix iwatensis Miki was done based on the stratified lengths. The difference in the amount of chlorophylla between leaves in a shoot with age and between seagrass species was analyzed statistically. It was found out that the distribution of chlorophyll a along leaf blades in Z. marina, Z. asiatica and P. iwatensis was heterogeneous and varied . The amount of chlorophyll a tended to be the highest in the upper parts than in the lower parts of the leaf blades. Leaf 2 and 3 in Z. marina and P. iwatensis contained the highest amount of chlorophyll, thus, providing the highest production in the shoots, while leaf 1 and 2 in Z. asiatica contained the highest chlorophyll content. Likewise, older tissue in Z. marina and P. iwatensis had the highest chlorophyll a content, while younger tissue of Z. asiatica contained the highest chlorophyll. Among the temperate seagrass species in Akkeshi Bay, P. iwatensis had the highest mean amount of chlorophyll a but nearly the same amount of Z. marina. Z. asiatica had the lowest amount of chlorophyll and found to be the least productive.
