Vibrio species of pond reared Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) and testing pathogenicity of Vibrio parahaemolyticus

The prawn fishery is the most important fishery of India. A study was made to focus the ecology of Vibrio species within the pond, identify the physicochemical factors associated with the development of the disease and to test the pathogenicity of isolates of V. parahaemolyticus. The study showed that the rearing water showed the presence of 10 Vibrio species viz. V. cholerae, V. costicola, V. fluvalis, V. meditterrtanei. V. minicus, V. mimicus, V. oradalli. V. parahaemolyticus, V. salmonicida and the V. splendid us. But the organs showed specified species. Among the isolates V. cholerae was found to be the predominant flora. The pathogenicity test revealed that upto the concentration of 10(6) cfu/ml the animals were normal till the experimental period. But the increased concentration of cfu/ml showed increased mortality. In 10(7) cfu/ml the LC(50) was observed at 48 hr, the morphological changes like black spot on gill cover, uropod were observed. The analysis of the major biochemical constituents such as the protein, carbohydrates and lipids showed significant variation between control and infected animals.
