A long-term field experiment on aerobic rice was started in 2001 dry season and still continuing at present. The experiment was conducted to to evaluate the performance of aerobic rice in terms of yield sustainability and water productivity. Aerobic fields were kept saturated during the first 10d to stabilize the young rice crop from transplanting shock and then re-irrigated when soil water potential at 15cm depth reached -30kPa. Aerobic rice saved irrigation water by at least 30% and yield was stabilized at about 4-5t/ha. However, the yields gradually declined over time. Aerobic rice had high water productivity because of efficient water use. Risk was associated with the presence of soil-borne organisms, which contributed to low sustainability in yield. Aerobic rice fits well in areas where available water is inadequate to grow flooded rice. Implementing management options, such as crop rotation, in finding the causes of the yield decline is necessary to further aerobic rice development beyond the experimental fluids.
