The three-year study has been done in order to investigate the effect of irrigation on leaf yield and quality of Virginia type tobacco. The irrigation variant with pre-irrigation soil humidity of 60% of FWC and non-irrigated control were considered as the trial treatment. The average dry Virginia type tobacco leaf yield in irrigation was by 92.8% higher than in non-irrigated control. The difference between the variant irrigated on 60% of FWC and non-irrigated control was statistically significant at P is less than 0.01. The average water consumption for evapotranspiration in vegetation period was 504.2 mm in irrigated plots, and 372.7 mm in control variant. Highly significant correlation coefficients were found between the methods for calculating referent evapotranspiration (ETPo) according to Tornthwaite (r=0.90), FAO Penman-Monteith (r=0.88), Hargreaves (r=0.76), and Blaney-Criddle (r=0.85) on one hand, and the measured tobacco ETP on the other. Regression equations for translating the calculated ETo into ETP of Virginia tobacco type were developed. Also were established correlation indexes for translating the calculated ETo according to Tornthwaite (r=0.91), FAO Penman-Monteith (r=0.91), Hargreaves (r=0.72), and Blaney-Criddle (0.89), into Virginia type tobacco ETP under the conditions of southern Serbia or similar soil and climatic conditions. Hydro-phyto-meteorological indexes for Virginia type tobacco were calculated. Accuracy of water balance, as the base of irrigation schedule made by using of hydro-phytotermic indexes for irrigation according to soil humidity, was also established. Analyze of Virginia type tobacco leaf physical and chemical characteristics revealed better tobacco quality in irrigated plots, with regard to non-irrigated ones.
