The objective of this study was to investigate influence of crop rotation and fertilization on chemical soil properties of chernozem and nitrogen balance in soil. The present study was performed on a long-term crop rotation trial that is being carried out at the Rimski Sancevi Experimental Field of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad (Serbia). The study treatments were as follows: fertilized two-field crop rotation (maize - wheat) established 1969/70 and unfertilized two-field crop rotation (maize - wheat) established 1946/47. For determination of changes occurred in the soil and evaluation of production capabilities of chernozem, soil chemical properties were compared with the soil properties observed 20 years before (1987/88). Nitrogen balance was calculated on the basis of N output by grain yield and harvest residue, and N input by N-fertilization and by incorporated harvest remains.
