A procedure has been developed to obtain an amalgamated zinc cathode to be used in the electrochemical cells for the simultaneous production of xylitol and xylonic acid by the electrolysis of the xylose solution. A zinc coating has been formed by electrodeposition from sulfate solutions on a copper mesh. The experimental results obtained have revealed that the amalgamated zinc cathode has good mechanical and electrochemical properties enabling, accordingly, its use in industrial cells for xylitol production.
