Biometric characteristics, the contents of sugars, starch, total and protein nitrogen, free amino acids, the amylase and invertase activities were investigated in needles, inner bark of stems and roots of 10-year-old self-sown pine trees in central Siberia in a field experiment imitating the effect of permafrost. A delay of soil thawing by 2.5 months caused with the intensification of growth and xylogenesis an increase in the content of sugars and decrease in the starch content in needles before thawing of the soil. Under these conditions, the accumulation both of protein nitrogen and free amino acids (especially, of nonproteinogenic amino acids and arginine) is suggested to improve the removal of nitrogen excess in the tissues.
