The market of food supplements (FS) started forming in the RF in the 90s of the 20 century. By 2005 in the market there were more than 600 enterprises which produced above 3000 FS items. In the RF a legislative, normative and methodical base providing FS application safety has been set up. All the FS in the RF are subject to state registration which is implemented by the Russian Consumer Supervision and supports the conformity of the quality and safety of FS to the RF sanitary legislation. Biologically active substances (BAS) composed by FS are used in amounts not exceeding the daily need of man for them and are used only with food during eating. The content in FS pharmacologically active compounds of medical plants should not exceed 50-60% of a single therapeutic dose when using a plant as a drug and should not be less than 10% of this dose. In 2000 a list of components which are allowed to be used in the FS production was approved. It covered above 190 items. Within FS for children under 14 a very restricted number of food, spicy and medical plants (35 items) is allowed for use, but it is recommended to use vitamins and mineral salts (25 items). A detail list of banned components has also been made up. Before state registration a sanitary epidemiological examination is also carried out. The demands to the content of labels have also been developed. They should have a name, full composition, application rules, contra-indications, an indication of necessary consulting the doctor before application and that FS is not a drug, production date, expiry period, storage conditions, information on state registration, location of producer and an organization authorized to accept claims from consumers. It is not admitted to use the term ecologically pure product. Selling FS is allowed through pharmaceutical institutions, specialized shops and dietary products sales departments
