A sample of fresh inflorescences from a comprehensive investigation of Calendula officinalis grown at Backi Petrovac (Vojvodina Province, Serbia) was used for analyze the effect of drying on microbiological status and content of active components of this species. Plant material was dried in solar dryer at 40 deg C and at ambient temperature, protected from adverse environment. Standard methods were employed to determine species of microorganisms and their numbers, as well as to analyze content of total carotenoids and essential oil of fresh and dried inflorescences. The largest count of bacteria and moulds and yeasts was found in fresh inflorescences, whereas the smallest in solar dried marigold. In inflorescences dried at room temperature and those dried in solar dryer however, lower content of total carotenoids and the essential oil when compared with fresh inflorescences was recorded.
