Store pest control: Fumigation of sorghum bag-stacks with sanphos (hydrogen phosphide) under gas-proof sheets

A phosphine fumigation trial was carried out, in a warehouse in two bag-stacks (10 tons each) of sorghum variety Feterita. Each stack was fumigated under 205 nun thick polyethylene sheeting, sealed to the concrete floor with sand snakes. Phosphine was applied as an aluminium phosphide formulation (Sanphos). Dosage rates were 3 or 4 tablets/ton (1.8 and 2.4 g phosphine/m3) with an exposure period of 5 days. Standard procedures were followed. Average moisture content of the grain was 7.5%. The temperature inside the stack was 31-34°C and the ambient relative humidity was about 50%. The residual phosphine concentrations were 210 and 190 ppm in the higher and lower dosages, respectively. Phosphine at both dosages completely (100% mortality) controlled adults and immature stages of all insects present. A dosage rate of 3 tablets/ton (1.8 g phosphine/m3) is recommended for disinfestation of bag stored sorghum under gas-proof sheets for an exposure period of five days, with good sealing
