Growth, yield and fruit quality of five navel orange cultivars grown in Jabel Marra,Western Sudan

Five navel orange cultivars grafted on sour orange rootstocks of two age groups(10 and 20 years old) were traditionally grown in Nyertete, Jebel Marra, Western Sudan. These cultivars were planted at 7 x 7 m spacing and evaluated for growth, yield and fruit quality during 2002/03 and 2003/04 seasons. Tree height, width, canopy volume and girth were significantly different among the cultivars. Thackery and Gillette were leading in all growth parameters while Shendi was trailing. During both seasons and among both the 10 and 20 year old trees, there were significant differences among cultivars in total number of fruits and fruit weight produced by the cultivars and fruit yields were higher in the 20 year old trees. Thackery and Parent resulted in the highest number of fruits and fruit weight compared to the others. Differences were significant among the cultivars in most of the tested quality characteristics. Thackery and Frost had the highest total soluble solids, while Shendi and Frost had the highest juice content by weight. Also, Thackery and Frost had the least rind thickness, the lowest rind weight while Frost, Shendi and Parent had the highest ascorbic acid content. Thus, the cultivars Thackery and Parent proved to be the most productive while Thackery, Frost and Shendi were superior for quality in Jebel Marra area
