With the rapid expansion of physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) growing area, changes in agroecosystem may occur and result in the outbreak of several insect pests of physic nut. The research reported here was aimed to survey key and potential insect pests of physic nut. The survey areas included both Bangkhen and Kamphaengsaen Campuses of Kasetsart University. It was also focused on basic control techniques for any key pests. The results showed that physic nut was attacked by several chewing and sucking insects i.e. mealybug, scale insects, thrips, shield-backed bug, green weevil, caterpillars and also insect-related pest such as broad mite. Mealybug was considered to be one of the key insect pests which can cause serious damage to physic nut. Another potential key pest is shield-backed bug which uses its long needle-like mouthpart to pierce into the fruits. This feeding habit may affect the quantity and quality of oil content in the seeds. From preliminary experiment, it was found that solution of dish-washing liquid was effective against crawler stage of mealy bug. Also, from laboratory test it was found that sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a key active ingredient of several cleansing agents such as shampoo, liquid soap, dish-washing liquid and tooth paste shows insecticidal activity against immature mealybugs. Dish-washing liquid and SLS are quite safe to farmers and environment and may be used for mealybug control in the field. However, further field tests are required to check for the effective rate and any possible phytotoxic effects.
