Bacterial isolation from intestine of Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei Boone) cultured in shrimp farm area of Chachoengsao and Nakhorn Pathom province was conducted. From 80 shrimp samples, five species of Bacillus including B. licheniformis, B. cereus, B. coagulans, B. sphaericus and B. subtilis were identified. Inhibitory effect of these Bacillus spp. over pathogenic Vibrio harveyi by cross-streak method revealed the inhibitory activity by B. licheniformis BLF and BLS, colonization activity by B. cereus BCES and B. sphaericus and no activity by B. cereus BCEF, B. coagulans and B. subtilis. The co-culture study in 20 ppt sea water indicated varied inhibition activity depending on species of Bacillus. After 120 hrs of co-culture, B. licheniformis BLF, B. licheniformis BLS, B. cereus BCEF, B. cereus BCES, B. coagulans, B. sphaericus and B. subtilis could reduce the number of V. harveyi from 1.57*10**(5) cfu/ml to 5.67*10**(4), 1.03*10**(4), 7.96*10**(4), 8.00*10**(4), 1.50*10**(5), 3.67*10**(4) and 6.67*10**(4) cfu/ml or counted as 63.98, 34.32, 49.36, 49.15, 2.54, 76.69 and 57.63 percents reduction, respectively. All Bacillus spp. in co-culture with V. harveyi showed good growth during the experimental period. The result from this study indicated the strong potential for the application of these isolated, Bacillus spp., as another means for the control of pahogenic V. harveyi and also as a probiotic for Pacific white shrimp.
