During 20042006 a field trial with the new chick pea variety Balkan was carried out on slightly leached chernozem soil in the trial field of Dobroudzha Agricultural Institute. The aim of the investigation was to determine the optimum sowing and nitrogen fertilization rates for the new variety under the conditions of the slightly leached chernozem soils in Dobrudzha region. Three sowing rates were tested: 40, 50 and 60 germinating seeds per m2, as well as four nitrogen fertilization variants: 0, 30, 60 and 90 kg/ha against phosphorus background of 60 kg/ha. The trial was designed by the split plot method, in four replicates of the variants, the harvest plot area being 12 m2. It was found that the year conditions had the highest effect on the grain yield from variety Balkan under the conditions of slightly leached chernozem soil, followed by the fertilization and sowing rates. Thousand seed weight also varied under the effect of the year conditions and the fertilization rate. Out of the three investigated indices, the harvest index was the most conservative one.
