Owing to features of the biology folding mollusc Dreissena polymorpha possesses ability to form extremely dense populations in reservoirs occupied by it. In turn, the high density of the population, the attached way of life and filtrational type of feeding of Dreissena polymorpha cause essential displacement of productional-destruction processes of water depth to a bottom - the process of ecosystem benthification. Mechanisms of benthification, caused by Dreissena polymorpha, are studied well enough. However out of attention of researchers there is that fact, that at the expense of mollusc shells in a reservoir the quantity of a firm substratum, suitable for formation of periphyton communities considerably grows. It is necessary to expect, that functioning of similar communities will bring also the certain contribution in benthification. The purpose of the present work - to estimate an abundance of periphyton on shells of Dreissena polymorpha, living in mesotrophic lake of moderate width. Since its invasion into Lake Naroch in 1980s, Dreissena polymorpha has considerably increased the amount of substrate suitable for periphyton. The density of the periphyton on zebra mussels significantly decreases with depth due to light limitation was found. However, the density increased with the size of mussels. In August 2006, total per lake stock of the periphyton on zebra mussel shells was valued in 104 tons of organic matter
