A selection experiment aimed at decreasing backfat thickess (GD) at restrained intramuscular fat content (GIM) is presented. Pigs were selected according to the mid-parent (litter) breeding values for GD at 180 days and for GIM content in the gluteus medius adjusted for carcass weight. Pigs in group S (n=172) were selected against GD while pigs in group C (n=188) were randomly chosen. GIM was maintained similar between groups. Pigs in group S had less GD at 180 days than pigs in group C (16.2 vs. 17.8 mm, p<0.05). No significant difference was found between groups for IMF content and fatty acid composition, both in gluteus medius and longissimus dorsi. However, pigs from group S had lower body weight at 180 days than pigs from group C (103.3 vs. 106.4, p<0.05). The results of the experiment indicate that selection against GD at restrained IMF can be a good strategy for decreasing GD while keeping GIM fixed but caution should be taken to not decrease body weight.
