The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of incorporating wheat brain (WB) in the diet on the digestive function and microbial activity in newly-weaned pigs. A total of 128 piglets (24 +/- 3 d) were assigned randomly to 1 of 4 experimental diets. Dietary treatments consisted on a control diet (CT) based on corn, barley and whey which was supplemented with 4% WB. These two treatments were subdivided in non-loperamide (LOP) (0) treated and LOP treated animals. At day 13 postweaning animals treated with LOP showed a higher average daily gain and feed intake especially in the animals fed with WB. LOP also increased the faecal crude protein PB and organic matter (OM) digestibility, whereas WB reduced the OM digestibility. LOP treatment also affected the microbial activity increasing the concentration of short-chain fatty acids and butyric acid in the faeces, especially in animals that consumed WB. On the other hand, WB inclusion tended to reduce the enterobacteria counts. It can be concluded that inclusion of WB at 4% combined with LOP improved the performance and the health status of the piglets.
