The present study aimed to investigate the effect of dietary L-tryptophan supplementation from day 5 to day 21 post-partum on sows and litter performance. A total of 20 multiparous sows were fed the same maize-barley based lactation diet only differing in tryptophan level: T1; SID Trp = 0.16 (n=9) and T2; SID Trp = 0.22 (n=11). Body condition scores (BCS) and Backfat thickness (BF) was measured on day 7 after farrowing and 21 days post-partum. No significantly differences were observed between treatments neither for sows' average daily feed intake nor for BCS loss or BF loss during lactation. However sows fed the Trp supplemented diet apparently lost less BCS (5.4%) and less BF (10.0%) than sows fed the control diet. Piglets' body weight and piglets' average daily gain tended to be higher in sows fed the Trp supplemented diet than those fed the control diet (6.32 vs 5.25 kg; P=0.07 and 0.262 vs 0.199 kg; P=0.09). It is concluded that tryptophan supplementation of sows' diets during lactation may improve litter performance without affecting sow reserves.
