The aim of this study was to compare milk quality, according to various parameters, before and after the installation of automatic milking system (AMS). We collected data from 12 dairy farms in La Coruña and Castilla-León, Spain: nine farms had one AMS, two farms add two, and one farm add four AMS, all installed over two years. We studied the productivity, butyric content, protein, microorganisms and somatic cells, in the periods before and after the AMS. The observed increase in production had effect in the milk composition. The butyrous content decreased, less in farms with 2 and 4 AMS, because the increase in production was also lower. The protein content, after introduction of AMS increased in farms with 1 AMS, which did not happen in farms with 2 and 4 AMS. The micro-organisms decreased after AMS. This may be explained by a greater control after AMS, as well the greater efficiency of the cleaning that the robotic system has. The cell count decreased in farms with 1 AMS, and increased in farms equipped with 2 and 4 AMS. This may be justified by an increase of milking frequency on farms with 1 AMS, unlike the farms with 2 and 4 AMS, probably due to the greater interval between milkings, which is reflected in cell count.
