The objective of this study was to analyse the effects of feeding two doses of allopurinol (25 and 50 mg/kg body weight) for 5 weeks on the bacterial communities in the crop and cecum of broilers. The DNA was isolated from samples of digesta and the ITS1 region of rDNA operon was amplified by PCR and analyzed by ARISA. At the end of the experimental period, allopurinol reduced (P<0.001) the daily gain of broilers by 30.7 and 75.4% (values for the low and high doses, respectively), but neither the Shannon index nor the number of phylotypes were affected (P=0.87 and 0.90, respectively). Both the Sannon index and the number of phylotypes were higher (P<0.001) in the cecum compared with the crop. Results of the dendogram suggest that allopurinol had a direct effect on the bacteria of the crop, and that, even though uric acid production was decreased, had no indirect effects on intestinal bacteria.
