An experiment was conducted on the same swards over a period of 2 years to investigate the effect of high rates of N fertilizer, with and without lime, on dry matter yield of buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris Linn. var Bileola). Yields were rather low in spite of the high rates of N applied. There was a large reduction in yield in the 2nd year compared with the 1st year. The study indicated that lime was needed where large amounts of ammonium sulphate were applied. It confirmed the risk of disappointing and poorly sustained yields on tropical soilswhich have been cropped for someyears even where large amounts of N, P and K fertilizers have been applied. This may be associated partly with loss of organic matter from the soil. The experiment indicates responses to large amounts of N under the above conditions and the effect of lime.
