Intercropping of maize with cowpeas and of sorghum with beans, cowpeas, pigeon peas and rice significantly reduced the grain yield of the major crops when all the crops were sown on the same day, but there was no adverse effect on grain yield of the major crops when the companion crops were sown 4 weeks after the main crops. Intercropping of maize with pigeon pea significantly increased total grain yield per unit area regardless of when the former was sown, and intercropping of sorghum with rice significantly increased total yield per unit area when the two crops were sown on the same day.
