Effect of planting of data on the growth and yield of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) in western Nageria

Tomato was sown on four dates which were at monthly intervals, starting from mid-March at two sites in western Nigeria. Seedlings from each sowing were transplanted into the field a month later. At final harvest, the dry weight of fruit as percentage of total short dry weight as well as relative growth rate and net assimilation rate declined with delay in planting. Early planting encouraged the production of greater leaf area, fruit yield, number of fruits per plant and average fruit weight than did later planting. It was concluded that under rain-fed conditions, tomato should be sown when the early rains are regular.
