Oogenesis and the stages of maturation in the female cichlid fish, tilapia mossambica.

Cyclical changes in the histology of the ovary of Tilapia mossambica are described.Primary germ cells proliferate through mitotic divisions, giving rise to oogonia of subsequent generations. After the last mitotic division, the daughter oogonial cells transform into oocytes. These oocytes, after a short synaptic phase, increase considerably in size, first as a result of protoplasmic inclusions, followed by a period of accumulation of trophic substances in the egg, marking the end of development. Maturation takes place after the egg has obtained a maximum size of 1,200fl. The stages of maturation of the ovary are also reported. Six stages are distinguished.
