The project would involve taking an inventory of the natural enemies, including disease pathogens of the pest, C minuta within the oil palm belts. Detailed surveys would be undertaken in the major oil palm belts with the view of establishing the role of disease pathogens in the anagement of the pest. During the surveys a collection would be made of all dead adults of C minuta found on the fronds. Attempts would then be made to culture any fungal growth associated with the dead insects on the appropriate medium. The cultures so obtained would be used to arti ficially infect healthy adult insects in petri dishes and sleeve cages to establish the possible role of the fungi in the death of the individuals observed earlier on. A positive outcome of this preliminary investigation would lead to the identifica-tion of the beneficial fungi. Laboratory trials would also be conducted to determine the host range/specificity of the identified fungi. A fungus that is specific to the oil palm leaf miner would be preferable since it is envisag~d to use the pathogen(s) to augment the regulatory activity of the predator ants which have also been observed to be beneficial in the management of the pest. Pure cultures of the fungus would be prepared after the confirmation of its benefit and host range. This could lead to the fonnulation and application of such fungal cultures as a biopesticide.
