Three different greenhouse structures were tested for tomato (Lycopersion esculentum L. Mill. nom. Cons.) cultivation during 2005-07 to find out suitable greenhouse for crop production in mid hills of north-west Himalaya. The greenhouse effectiveness in providing the congenial environment for the crop was evaluated. All the 3 greenhouse could raise the winter temperature from 2 to 8 C than the outside and relative himidity was maintaned between 65 and 95%. These finding suggested that though the mechanically controlled greenhouse provides better control than the naturally ventilated greenhouse but the production cost is higher (Rs 5.10/kg). similarly, intial cost in the bamboo based greenhuse is low but the production cost was the highest (Rs 6.45/ka). The quonset type galvanized iron pipe based greenhouse using natural ventilation was found most economical (Production cost as Rs 4.99/ka).
