The efficacy of Ivermectin adminstred by subcutaneous injection and pour-on against naturally acquired larval infestation of Oestrus ovis in sheep waas studied. Sixteen sheep with clinical signs of infestation hrboring natural infestation with this parasite were randomly allocated to 4 treatment groups. sheep in groups 1 and 2 treated subcutaneously with a 1.0% W/V sterile solution of Ivermectin at a dose rate of 0.2 mg/kg (1 ml/50kg of bodyweight) and 0.4 mg/kg (2 ml/50 kg of body weight) respectively. Sheep in groups 3 and 4 recieved a 1.0% W/Vsterile solution of Ivermectin at a does rate of 0.5 mg/kg (1 ml/10kg of bodyweight) and 1mg/kg (2ml/10kg bodyweight) respectively, applied as a pour-on along the dorsal midline. all animals were slaughtered on 4th day of treatment. The heads were examined for the larvea of Oestrus ovis by splitting in half down the midline., opening the sinuses, nasal cavity and turbinates. All larvae found were transfered to a petri dish for examination under the stereomicroscope to detemine viability and to classify the stage of their development. Forty two sheep harboured one or more larvae of different stages. Eighteen sheep with clinical signs of infestation were free from infestation by first, second and third instar larvae of oestrus ovis. the results of this trial indicated that Ivermectin is highly (100%) effective against the three larval stages of Oestrus ovis in sheep at a dose rate of 1 and 2 ml/50kg bodyweight. Ivermectin pour-on at a dose rate of 1 and 2 ml/10kg bodyweight was only effective on first larval stage of Oestrus ovis. No side effects or adverse reaction was noticed in sheep treated with Ivermectin.
