The non-destructive evaluation of green moisture content in todomatsu (Abies sachalinensis) using a lateral impact vibration method

We applied a lateral impact vibration method to todomatsu (Abies sachalinensis) plus-tree clones. This method is non-destructive and makes it easy to estimate the green moisture content (Mc) of the heartwood in living trees. The diameter at breast height (d) and the fundamental frequency (f) were measured in living trees. The relationship between d and 1/f has a highly significant correlation, and the regression line differed between clones. In addition, it is possible to detect decay in a tree stem according to the relationship between d and 1/f. A significant correlation between 1/df and Mc of heartwood was obtained in individual trees and in clones. The correlation coefficient of clones was higher than that of individual trees. Many wood quality traits, for example, d, the Mc of sapwood, and the percentage of heartwood, were affected by the relationship between 1/df and Mc of heartwood. It is possible to divide the Mc of heartwood into the three groups (higher, middle and lower) according to the ranking of 1/df of individual trees. In the lower group, the Mc of heartwood could be estimated more precisely than in the other groups. Therefore, the lateral impact vibration method is useful for the genetic improvement of Mc. This method could allow us to select lower groups ranked by 1/df non-destructively.
