Developing the method estimating the electric conductivity value at fresh condition from the value at air-dry basis in livestock waste compost

To develop the method converting the EC value at air-dry matter basis (air-dried sample: distilled water = 1:10 wt/vol) to the value at fresh condition (fresh sample: distilled water = 1:10 wt/vol), EC in livestock waste compost from 21 composting plant were measured at seven different dilution levels (100, 120, 150, 200, 300, 400 or 500ml of distilled water were added to 10g of air-dried compost). 1. Logarithm of EC value and the volume of dilution water were correlated linearly. The equation obtained was follows. Fresh matter EC (dS/m)=10. -0.8358*log(100*dry matter ratio of air-dry matter/dry matter ratio of fresh matter)+1.6642+log(air-dry matter EC (dS/m)). 2. The error from this equation was 0.30dS/m. 3. When the moisture content of air-dried sample was 5 or 10%, the error were 0.29 or 0.40dS/m, respectively. These results suggested that this convert method is useful to rough evaluation on livestock waste compost in field.
