The growth of pure even-aged stands of spruce is quite intensive with the volume difference in 30-40 year-old stands about 20 m**3haE-l in one year. After the age of 40 a part of these stands (11%) start collapsing; and the volume difference may be even negative. Unfavourable soil moisture regime is believed to be one of the reasons for this process. However, 40-year field observations of the hydrological regime show no substantial variations in soil moisture on the sites of spruce stands. Consequently, the soil moisture fluctuations due to the meteorological conditions alone do not explain the stand collapse.
