The results of investigation about growth and development of oak and ash during 1997-2004 years on the basis of 9 experimental plots planted on the abandoned agricultural lands are summarized and evaluated. The impact of age and quality of planting material, methods of establishment, tending and protection of plantation are main factors for succesful afforestation of abandoned lands by oak and ash. The establishment of mixed plantations is recommended on the areas with unfavourable microclimate (frost, late frost etc.). The results of investigation on the experimental plots are certified to the facts by inquiry of owners of oak and ash plantations around the Latvia.
