In Europe, widespread fungi are Heterobasidion parviporum and Heterobasidion annosum that cause root rot in spruce and pine stands. Rot caused economic loss is especially in spruce stands, because the mycelium of a fungus is spread several meters in spruce stem. Latvian State Forest Research Institute Silava studies found that adult stem rot of spruce stands are distributed in an average of 6.9 meters. Institute estimates that spruce stands rot caused by direct forest is lost on average 700 Ls/ha (2006 prices), but they can reach up to 3,000 Ls/ha, depending on stand age and growing stock.
