Phytoplankton population in the area of tropical palm Nipa fruticans was found to be composed of five phyla namely Bacillarophycota, Volvophycota, Cyanophycota, Dinophycota and Euglenophycota. Bacillarophycota was the dominant phylum of the population and occupied 61.13 % and Volvophycota (23.63 %) constituted the second largest phylum in terms of population density. Forty phytoplankton species were encountered in the Nipa area. The maximum total number of phytoplankton was recorded in December (132000 cells/L) and the minimum in February (5000 cells/L). Phytoplankton density of the Fari Khal area indicated the fertility of the area. On the seedling stage Nipa showed a positive relation but at higher stage (3-12 years old plants) presented negative relation with phytoplankton population.
