Spatial and temporal distribution of phytoplankton in the firth of Clyde

Altogether 76 species of phytoplankton including 38 dinofagellates and 38 diatoms were collected during April to September 2005 through 53 mum mesh plankton net, using vertical hauls from a depth of 10 m in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland, UK. The highest abundance of diatoms (27 species) was observed in April and the lowest number (7 species) in June. The dinoflagellate data indicated high peak (29 species) in July and lowest number (11 species) in April. Spatial distribution of phytoplankton species was dynamic and variable. Surface salinity ranged from 30 to 33 per mile at all the sampling stations. The highest chl-a concentration (4.8 mg/ m-3) was recorded in July and the lowest (below 0.1 mg/ m-3) during August.
