Polymorphism of microsatellites and sequences of hypervariable domain 1 (CR-1) of control region of mtDNA were analyzed in brown hare populations from Serbia. Polymorphism of microsatellites Sat2, Sat5, Sat12, Sol33, Lsa2 and Lsa3 was determined by detection of alleles present in populations and basic parameters of intrapopulation and interpopulation variability were calculated. It was shown that chosen microsatellites are applicable in the research of genetic variability in Lepus europaeus populations and they express sufficient level of polymorphism. The most polymorphic locus was Lsa2 with 20 alleles, and the least polymorphic loci were Sat5 and Lsa3 with nine alleles each. Average observed heterozygoty for all populations studied was H0=0.494. Analysis of CR-1 region sequence polymorphism defined haplotypes present in brown hare populations and genetic variability parameters were calculated. It was shown that there are haplotypes present in brown hare populations from Serbia that were not registered before in other brown hare populations from Europe, and those were haplotype 41 and haplotype 45, both in West Serbia population. Moreover, all CR-1 sequences define brown hare individuals in B group of CR-1 haplotypes. Average value of haplotype diversity was Hd=0,944, and nucleotide diversity p=0,023. Based on genetic parameters of interpopulation variability, it was shown that on research area it could not be six populations of brown hares, but three exact genetically differentiated populations can be denotated: brown hare population of Vojvodina, inner Serbia (Central and East) and West Serbia. Based on the results of this research, the recommendations for Lepus europaeus species management were stated, in the scope of implementation of obligate genetic diversity analyses measurement in defined intervals.
