The activities of antioxidative defense enzymes in the blood of rats treated with olive oil

The aim of our study was to investigate the copper and zinc containing superoxide dismutase (CuZn SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities in red blood cells (RBCs), as well as phase II biotransformation enzyme glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity in the plasma of male, two months old Wistar albino rats. The rats were divided into two experimental groups: control animals and animals treated with olive oil (100 microL of virgin olive oil, i.m., every fifth day during 30 days). The obtained results show that olive oil induced a significant decrease of CuZn SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px activities in RBCs (P is less than 0.05) and significant increase of GST activity in the plasma (P is less than 0.05) in relation to the control animals. The results show that olive oil influences the activity of investigated enzymes in the blood of rats and in that way improves the overall antioxidative defense.
