The effect of diet on the in situ crude protein degradability of some plant-derived feedstuffs

This paper presents results on the crude protein degradability of maize gluten, sunflower meal, dehydrated alfalfa and soybean meal. The experiment included three fistulated rams fed diets having the roughage to concentrate ratios of 80:20, 50:50 and 20:80. The dynamics of the ruminal crude protein degradability of the above protein feedstuffs was evaluated at six incubation times: 4, 8, 12, 16, 24 and 48 hours. A comparison of the obtained results on the crude protein degradability of the test feedstuffs in the diet containing 20% roughage and 80% concentrate with those of the other diets showed lower values of crude protein degradability. The crude protein degradability of the feedstuffs tested in this study, was found to be affected by the diet composition, the variability between the feeds and the incubation period. The highest crude protein degradability was estimated in sunflower meal, at all incubation times and in all diets, followed by soybean meal and maize gluten. The lowest crude protein degradability was exhibited by dehydrated alfalfa, at all incubation times and in all diets.
