The microbiological activity of four samples of peat drawn from Gaj, Negotin, Gradiste and Pester, was observed. The presence of the total number of the following microorganisms was determined in the samples: fungi, actinomycetes, azotobacters, ammonificators, cellulolisers, free nitrogen fixers, clostridium and nitrifiers. The microbiological activity of the studied peats at the moisture content of 40% and the temperature of 35 deg C. In general, the microbiological activity in the peat lands is poor and retarded, and it depends on the chemical and physical properties. The differences depend on the degree of decomposition and there is a correlation. The poorly decomposed peat material provides the microorganisms much more material, so the microbiological activity is more intensive than in the more largely decomposed peats. The aim of the analysis of peat samples was to determine its usability in the nursery production and vegetable farming and also as the carrier of microbiological fertilizers. Although gained results point in the qualitative senses, these differences should not adversely affect peat usability.
