The peat-based media Gaj was found to be excellent for the preparation of seedling substrates. It mixes with both organic and mineral fertilizers. It is very pure and favourable for application in organic farming. Pepper seedlings were tested on the following substrates prepared from peat-based media Gaj and rotted manure: peat Gaj + manure (80:20), peat Gaj + manure (60:40) and peat Gaj + manure (40:60). The share of peat and manure in substrates was shown in volume percentages. The commercial substrate Stender A-280 was used as control. The following seedling parameters were tested: plant height, number of leaves per plant and plant weight. The effect of substrates on pepper seedlings varied. The best results were registered with the substrate peat Gaj + manure (60:40) and the worst with the substrate peat Gaj + manure (80:20). The conclusion emerges that organic farming favours the use of peat-based media Gaj + manure (60:40) in pepper seedling production.
